CASE STUDY

Spang image film + process film

How do you turn clay, fire, and shrink wrap into a film that moves and informs?

The Westerwald-based flower pot manufacturer Spang, located in Ransbach-Baumbach, has been producing flower pots since 1912 and supplying them to the entire world. We produced two interconnected films for the family business: an image film that reveals the people behind the pots, and a process film in which a pot tells its own life story. This involved five days of shooting during ongoing operations, an FPV drone, and a photo series created in parallel with the filming.

Clay and Character: Image and Process Film for the Westerwald Flower Pot Manufacturer

Challenge & Concept

When you think of a flower pot, you think of the pot itself. You don't see what happens beforehand: clay from the Westerwald, extruders, drying chambers, robotic arms, tunnel kilns, powder coating, and people everywhere who are masters of their craft. Spang wanted to show both the brand and the journey behind it. The briefing at the kick-off was short and very clear: down-to-earth, energetic, and showing that there is more to it than meets the eye.

This resulted in two films with two distinct characters. The image film is the "we" story: fast cuts, real employees, and a family business that has been reinventing itself since 1912. The process film replaces the factory tour for sales and customer communication and features an unusual narrator: the pot itself. Humorous, yet packed with all the information a customer needs to know about the manufacturing process.

Both were shot together to minimize disruption to operations. This kept the planning team on their toes, as the machines only run in the mornings, cleaning starts at 1:00 PM, and the goods fired over the weekend are only fresh out of the kiln on Mondays. So, Monday became "Kiln Day."

Implementation & Production Process

  • Preparation starting in June: Kick-off with the client, storyboards for both films, and an on-site recce covering over a dozen locations, from the clay pit to the powder coating hall
  • 28-page production binder with schedules for every single shooting day to ensure that two films and a photo shoot didn't get in each other's way during ongoing operations
  • Five shooting days in August 2026 in plants 1 through 3, in processing, storage, and the office, with film and photo production running in parallel
  • Real Spang employees in front of the camera: locksmiths, electricians, logistics staff, administration, and a father and son walking through the hall together
  • FPV drone for the flight through the Westerwald down into the valley, flown by our own FPV pilot
  • Lighting, sound design, and grading for the machine hall, furnace glow, and clay pit – and for the sound, which was already in abundance during this project
  • Image film in German and English, so it resonates with international clients as well
  • Parallel photo production with a consistent look for the catalog, website, and sales
  • Behind-the-scenes documentation of the entire shoot

The result

🎬 image film
A brand with attitude and craftsmanship: down-to-earth, approachable, and with real power behind it. It starts with an FPV flight through the Westerwald and concludes with "Spang. Home of the Flowerpot."

📽️ process film
The digital factory tour. Sales sends a link instead of an invitation to Ransbach-Baumbach, and the client still gets to see how things are made here, how reliably and punctually deliveries are handled, and what "Made in Germany" really means. No safety boots required.

📸 Photo series
A consistent look from the clay pit to the pallet: product shots, process shots, people, and spaces. These photos form the foundation for the new indoor and outdoor catalog.

🎥 Behind the scenes
Behind-the-scenes footage from all five days of filming for social media and recruiting.
